Quebec's explosive debate over “reasonable accommodation” for minorities, is unnerving for most immigrants, as private citizens and public servants condemned concessions being made in their workplace. As always these remarks are denting Canada's appeal to minorities. Sentiments echoed at a travelling commission on "reasonable accommodation" of religious minorities in Quebec were, "immigrants are buying their way into Quebec", Jews are the worst because they're "the most powerful. ... It's always been said that the Jews are the trampoline of money in the world." Other comments such as these have left many newcomers to Quebec uncomfortable. The NewCanadian believes that it is normal for every democratic society to have free and frank discussions on matters the define its ethos, the limits on how much a host community must adapt to welcome newcomers and common values. But, we are concerned that, in todays world of sound bites and quick quotes, such remarks may reflect Quebec and Canada as intolerant.
